Recent Nursing Grad Career Development–Nurse career development is important no matter what stage you are in. If you are a recent graduate, you may be finding it difficult to get your first job because you do not have the type of experience sought. There are some ways to address this issue including practicing your communication skills prior to interviewing. Another suggestion for recent grads is to research salary ranges, so you know that you can answer the question about salary expectations in a realistic way. Having at least two specific examples of key skills organizations are seeking, like leadership, critical thinking or empathic patient or personal interaction, will help you with effective interviewing.  It is also helpful to have a list of your computer and technical skills highlighted as part of your experience.

We interviewed several nurses and they all agreed that building a network of nurses before and after graduation is a good way to get your foot in the door. Other experts suggest that it is good to get a job in acute care or in a larger hospital so you can broaden your experience and exposure. These jobs are highly competitive, but helpful to those starting out. Even though there is a shortage of nurses, it is still challenging for recent grads to find their first job. It is important to expect some challenges and have patience with the job search process. It can still take effort for new nurses to be hired.  Going the extra mile to gain experience and qualifications may be needed. Another suggestion is to evaluate where most jobs are located and to work closely with the career development office at your school.
